We also offer mentoring sessions for your students (led by Gecko’s highly experienced devising performers), giving participants the chance to experience Gecko’s unique style of movement and physical theatre, as well as an opportunity to gain an insight into the creative processes Gecko’s devising performers use when creating a show.

Workshop 1:
Our unique blended model combines practical video exercises with Zoom teaching and focuses on the creation of a movement phrase in pairs. This workshop is supported by a Gecko company member remotely via Zoom. Please note, this workshop is not suitable for home teaching and is designed for students who are together in a venue.

Workshop 2:
Developed to support home learning, this workshop focuses on the creation of a movement phrase through solo / object work. Combining Zoom teaching and selected Gecko show clips, students explore the ordinary and extraordinary from their home environment. Please note, this workshop can be delivered remotely to students together in the classroom.

3 Gecko practitioners stand in a triangle formation wearing green t shirts in a dance studio. There are wires on the floor and a camera filming them. The 3 practitioners can be seen in the camera's view finder.

“The practitioner’s generosity and support throughout the session was superb and the students and I gained so much from their wisdom.”

Our digital workshops support the teaching of students in schools (Year 10 upwards), colleges and universities, and are perfect as an introduction to physical theatre, as an exam brief or stimulus, to support delivery of A/AS Level and International Baccalaureate courses for drama and theatre, or to enhance learning experience at degree or masters level. We’re proud to be a recommended practitioner on various GCSE, A/AS Level and IB syllabuses.

Digital workshops last 3 hours and can be delivered as one complete session or two 90-minute sessions to fit in with your timetable. Mentoring sessions lasting 90-minutes are also available to support students with their devising projects, led by Helen Baggett or Ryen Perkins-Gangnes.

  • The maximum group size is 20 students.

  • The workshop space should be an appropriate size for the group, allowing sufficient personal space so as not to come into contact with an obstruction or fellow performer. The room should have a ceiling height that allows for jumping and flooring should be suitable for working barefoot (clean, clear and safe).

We also ask that the room be kept as clear as possible of other objects to minimise the chance of injury through slips and trips.

  • Access to a stable internet connection with download/upload speeds suitable for video streaming is essential. You will also need a sufficiently large monitor or video projector/screen connected to a laptop (or similar) with a webcam, microphone and speakers connected. The screen/speakers should be large enough to allow the participant(s) to clearly watch/hear Gecko’s instructional videos and engage with the workshop leader.

The webcam should be positioned so that the workshop leader can clearly see the majority of the room and all of the participant(s) taking part, with the participant(s) facing the camera.

We use ZOOM (https://zoom.us/) for our digital workshops and we’ll provide you with a unique ‘meeting code’ and password to access the workshop. We ask you to ‘join the meeting’ 15 minutes prior to the workshop to test that all equipment is working correctly. If you would like to test your setup before then or at a different time, please let us know.

Some large sheets of paper and some coloured pens may be required for Digital Workshop 1. Bamboo canes are also required for Digital Workshop 1. The ends should be made safe at a length that maintains social distancing as required by your risk assessment (1 bamboo cane per pair of students).

Tables or chairs are not needed unless requested for the workshop content.

  • Students should be introduced to Gecko’s work prior to their workshop with us. Please encourage them to visit our website and YouTube Channel, on which we have many video resources as well as some of our past shows which are all available to watch in full.

For the workshop itself we ideally prefer to work in an environment where participants wear their own clothing, rather than uniforms. This should be suitable for physical activity, such as tracksuit bottoms, leggings, t-shirts and sweatshirts. Workshops are usually done in bare feet, but participants should bring trainers or other suitable sports shoes just in case. We ask participants not to wear jewellery and for long hair to be tied back.

Gecko workshops are highly physical and those taking part should bring a bottle of water with them to keep hydrated throughout the workshop.

  • Absolutely! Gecko are experienced with working with groups of multiple abilities and are keen to ensure all participants have the best experience possible during our workshops. There is a section in our booking form where you can detail any additional requirements, and we will also ensure there is an opportunity to further discuss these with your practitioner prior to the workshop.
