The Time of Your Life

Live from Television Centre

The Time of Your Life was a 30-minute performance by Gecko created specially for LIVE FROM TELEVISION CENTRE, a live broadcast that aired on BBC Four on Sunday 15th November 2015. Showcasing independent theatre companies and makers based in the UK, four companies performed as part of the two-hour programme, with a fifth piece exclusive to BBC iPlayer.

The Time of Your Life has an ordinary man at its heart. Desperate to feel different and to find a real human connection in a world consumed by social networks and mass advertising, the man embarks on a journey through rooms representing different milestones in his life. The rooms are transformed using powerful visual effects to create an increasingly vivid world for the viewer that disintegrates as quickly as it appears.

The five performances were all filmed in the iconic Television Centre complex (the headquarters of BBC Television between 1960 and 2013) and was the BBC’s first live broadcast there since 2013.

“I have never before truly appreciated the blinding power of physical theatre, but at a time when we are having to put things into different perspectives, this is a must-watch.”

Violet Mackintosh, My Theatre Mates

  • “This is a wonderful piece of theatre that is worth indulging in, reflecting upon the interactions that make us, us.” Udita Banerjee, The Wee Review

“Gecko’s brand of dance theatre is fast, spinning and dreamlike, following one man through life. Clever camera work allows for multiple sets, which are then turned inside out for the show’s Truman Show-like end.” Georgia Snow, The Stage

“The choreography was fluid and sublime, beautiful to watch and adding to the narrative rather than intruding upon it.” Bradley Barlow, Cultbox

“I have never before truly appreciated the blinding power of physical theatre, but at a time when we are having to put things into different perspectives, this is a must-watch.” Violet Mackintosh, My Theatre Mates
