Black Lives Matter at Gecko

A Statement from Amit Lahav, Artistic Director at Gecko

Gecko has been a functioning arts organisation for 17 years.  We have been making work and developing education programmes and projects in the UK and internationally throughout that time. In the wake of recent events in America and the Black Lives Matter Movement, my overriding feeling is that we, me and Gecko have not done enough. Multiculturalism, equality and difference have been central themes in everything we do, but this moment in time, in union with the Black Lives Matter Movement is a call to arms: we need to do much more. I will make immediate changes to the organisation and use the platform we have in Ipswich, the UK and around the world to address the inequality in our society, in our communities and in the arts.

  • Firstly, I will address our board.  We need to make sure that black people are represented at the highest decision making level.

  • We will listen, discuss and listen again to our local communities as we begin to build our home on the waterfront in Ipswich.  We want those voices to engage with the development of this building at the earliest possible point and then feel included in the journey.

  • I will ensure that my team have the time, resources and support that will allow them to understand more about Black Lives Matter, and to reflect this knowledge in their work.

  • We will be vocal and present alongside our friends ISCRE (Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality) for demonstrations in the town.

  • After consulting with ISCRE we will approach our local Borough Council and MP in support of the efforts of the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Finally, I would like to say that now more than ever, we, as artists, must not be afraid to speak out, to confront and also to empathise. Our voices are important, we are the bearers of truth alongside the activists and educators. Making work that is relevant to the changing world around us is essential.

Best Wishes,

Amit
